Create Your Own Landscape Poem Project

Create Your Own Landscape Poem Project

You are going to create your own landscape poem. Think of all the things you have learned about poetry including language, shape and rhythm.

1. Choose an image of the Canadian landscape.
You need to know where the picture is taken
just like the one about Georgian Bay.

2. With your image, you need to have a poem with a title.
Your poem needs 16-25 lines with at least 5 different examples of literary devices.

You must put your literary devices in a different colour so I know you know when you used them.

3. Post it on your blog in a nice and presentable manner.

You will be marked on:

The MOST IMPORTANT PART --- Quality and Maturity of your poem

  • Is it creative, original, thoughtful and insightful?
  • Does it relate to the picture? Do you connect to your picture?
  • Do you have at least 5 different examples of literary devices?
  • Does it follow the instructions? Do you complete it? Do you have a title?
  • Is it presented in a clear and creative way on your blog?
  • Do you have a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes?
  • Is your language poetic?

Important

Use your own words to make creative poetry. Don't copy from the Internet and put it as your own words. I want to know about your ideas!

Today

Finish your lessons from last week!

Remember to see me for the puppet show if it is your group!

If you miss your date, you won't be marked!

See you afterschool!

The Lonely Land
A.J.M. Smith

Cedar and jagged fir

uplift sharp barbs

against the gray

and cloud-piled sky;

and in the bay

blown spume and windrift

and thin, bitter spray

snap

at the whirling sky;

and the pine trees

lean one way.

A wild duck calls

to her mate,

and ragged

and passionate tones

stagger and fall,

and recover,

and stagger and fall,

on these stones -

are lost

in the lapping of water

on smooth, flat stones.

This is a beauty

of dissonance,

this resonance

of stony strand,

this smoky cry

curled over a black pine

like a broken

and wind-battered branch

when the wind

bends the tops of the pine

like a broken

and wind-battered branch

when the wind

bends the tops of the pines

and curdles the sky

from the north.

This is the beauty

of strength

broken by strength

and still strong

8. What did you learn in this lesson? Explain in 5-8 sentences.

After Port Royal - Champlain Continues

THE FOUNDING OF NEW FRANCE
(Adapted from Page 226-227 of your textbook)

Port Royal was not a great success and eventually de Monts lost his trading monopoly. However, Champlain was still convinced that Canada could be profitable for the French. The year is 1608, he went up the St. Lawrence river to what is now Quebec City. He established a post - a habitation - at Quebec and made friends with the Algonkians and Motagnais against the Iroquois. Quebec was chosen because it was almost an impregnable natural fort. In return, they agreed to not trade any furs with the English. Champlain helped the Algonkians win several battles againsy the Iroquois because the French owned firearms.

Samuel De Champlain - Port Royal

Samuel De Champlain at Port Royal in Nova Scotia

As you now know, Samuel de Champlain was a soldier and a navigator. He was very interested in the Americas and believed Canada could be profitable for the French. With the support of the King of France and the help of Sieur de Monts, he tried to set up French colonies. If he could this, he was allowed to have a monopoly on the fur trade.

1. Why would Samuel de Champlain want to have a monopoly on the fur trade? Explain in 3-5 sentences. What does monopoly mean?

2. Why would the King want to set up French colonies in Canada? Explain in 3-5 sentences.

Champlain first attempted to create a small trading post called "Port Royal" in what is now Nova Scotia. It was not a great success because there was no business and the settlement was abandoned by 1607.

3. Can you find two pictures of Port Royal, Nova Scotia today on the Internet? What does it look like? Explain each picture in 5-8 sentences what you see.

When the settlement was abandoned in 1607, some settlers were permitted to stay if they agreed not to work on the fur trade. They became highly skilled farmers and would form the colony of Acadia (as we have learned before).

A Teacher's Poem
Written by Ms. Chan

All I want is for you to learn.
Is that too much to ask?

All I want is for you to care.
Is that too much to ask?

All I want is for you to do your homework.
Is that too much to ask?

All I want is for you to know how important school is.

All I want is for you to do the lessons in class that I prepared for you.
Is that too much to ask?

All I want is to improve your English.
Is that really too much to ask?

All I want is for you to ask me questions when you don't understand.
Is that really and truly too much to ask?

All I want is for you to be the best that you can be, have a good future, go to a good school, take care of the people you care about, do the things you want to do in the future, have the ability to be intelligent, be independent, be a good citizen and just have the chance and
choice to live the life you want to live.

Is that too much to ask?
If it is, I apologize because it is only because I care.

Afterall, who needs to graduate?

What You Think is What You See

What You Think is What You See
(Adapted from your textbook)

What You Think is What You See
(Adapted from your textbook)

The people who believed the earth is flat had a perception of the world that is different from reality. Have you ever noticed when people believe something, that is all they can see? For example, if you are looking at a cloud and your friend thinks they see a dog, all of a sudden you can see one too! This is because of the human trait perception.

How you see the world is based on your background knowledge (what you know before), biases, and even the recent suggestions made to you by the world around you.

How does this relate to explorers and the Northwest Passage?

Background Knowledge
The Europeans had no firm background knowledge about North America. Nobody really knew what it looked like or how big it was. Therefore, it was possible the Northwest Passage could exist because nobody said it didn't.

Bias
The European explorers and monarch were biased in favour of the Northwest Passage because it suited their agenda and it matched with their goals.

Immediate Suggestions
Maps during this time showed the Northwest Passage existed. The dream of this passage would be gone when the reality of geography was found out. It was very hard for these explorers to believe the Northwest passage didn't exist.

In other words, there was a kind of feedback loop of false information. Maps that were wrong made people perceive there was a Northwest Passage to China. Look at page 225 of your textbook to find out what a feedback loop looks like.

Questions
Answer each question in 3-5 sentences.

1. If the maps around you showed the existence of the Northwest Passage, would you believe it? Why?

2. If you were John Cabot and someone told you the Northwest Passage didn't exist. What would you say? What would you feel? How would you react?

3. Find a map by Humphrey Gilbert from 1582. What do you see in the picture? Explain.

4. Why did the Northwest Passage suit the goals (agenda) of the Eurpean explorers and monarchs?

5. Feedback loops help us to see reality as a system. Can you think of an example of a feedback loop from your own life? Look at page 225 of your textbook to help you.

6. What did you learn so far about explorers and the colonization of Canada?

Flat Earth

By now you have read that many European explorers, beginning with John Cabot, were convinced of the existence of a Northwest Passage to China. They and their governments had good reasons to believe this theory.

Groups like the Flat Earth Society - people who say the Earth is flat - believe it is is still flat even when there is photographic evidence from space.

Your Task

Please post into a new entry. Use 8-12 sentences for each question for FULL marks.

1. Find two pictures showing the earth is flat. Explain what you see in EACH picture in 8-12 sentences.

2. Imagine you are a person who believes the earth is still flat today. What are 5 reasons to support your argument that it is still flat?

3. Do you think human beings have a false concept of the earth and the universe today?

When you are finished, you have free time!
